IPL - V to begin on April 4 Laxman and Co in; Pak players out
Hyderabad, Oct 14 (INN): The governing council of the BCCI money-spinner Indian Premier League (IPL) has played it safe, at least for now.
In one stroke it has revealed two sides of the same coin-while indicating that players associated with the now-dubious entity Kochi Tuskers would be reconsidered for auction next time round, it has virtually snubbed the third time lucky syndrome.
If the doors have been virtually closed for Pakistan players, there is some good news for players like VVS Laxman, Muthaiah Muralitharan, S Sreesanth, Mahela Jayawardene and S Sreesanth. They all will be up for grabs at the time of the next auction.
Hectic parleys were the order of the day in Friday's meeting of the IPL Governing Council here. Even as it finalized the days and schedule of the fifth edition of IPL, it has touched upon the two crucial topics, which concern the fate of Tuskers' players and those keen on coming over from Pakistan.
Among the only positive that was arrived at was the schedule-DLF IPL 2012 will be held from April 2-May 27 with the inaugural match being played in Chennai.
According to BCCI Secretary Sanjay Jagdale, nine teams will participate in the fifth edition following the ouster of the Kochi franchise. There is a possibility that the organising committee would opt for the earlier trend of home and away format of competition.
New IPL boss Rajiv Shukla pointed out that the fate of Pakistan players was not discussed. A final cal will have to be taken by the franchisee owners ahead of the auctions. However, it is learnt that players from Pakistan would not be considered even this time around.
Other issues like domestic-foreign players' ratio, and auction modalities would be discussed in the Council's next meeting. Franchisee owners would have a more vibrant participatory role as they have been asked to give suggestion on varied topics, including format, structure and team composition.
