Hyderabad Wicketkeeper sets world record MUMBAI: Hyderabad's Ibrahim Khaleel stood tall behind the stumps in the Group 'B' Ranji Trophy Plate league match against Assam in Guwahati on Sunday.
If in the first innings he had an hand in seven dismissals, he emulated that feat in the second innings to script a world record of snapping up 14 victims in a match.
In the process, the 28-year-old Hyderabad keeper went past WR James' record of 13 victims, who achieved that feat in a Zimbabwe first class match between Matabeleland and Mashonaland CD at Bulawayo in 1995-96.
'I did not know that I had broken a world record till I reached the dressing room when my coach Sunil Joshi conveyed the news. My dream was to perform well for Hyderabad and today my team won. It made my day,' said Khaleel.
In fact, Khaleel had equalled the Indian record of seven catches in an innings which was in the name of S Nath of Assam against Tripura at the same venue in 2001-02.
The highest number of victims by a wicketkeeper in an innings are in the names of Tahir Rashid (Habib Bank vs Paco at Gujranwala, 1992-93) and James, who had nine scalps.
Rashid achieved that feat in the first innings while James did it in the second innings. Khaleel held four catches and effected three stumpings.
Going into the second innings, Khaleel took five catches and effected two stumpings to enter into the record books.
'I enjoyed when I effected the three stumpings in the first innings and then held two leg side catches in the secondings,' said Khaleel, who also broke the Indian record which stood in the name of S Nath (11) and MS Dhoni (India 'A' vs Zimbabwe Select XI, Harare, 2004).
