BioAsia 2011 gets underway in city Hyderabad, Feb 22 (INN): The 8th annual International biotech event 'BioAsia 2011,' organised by the Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) was inaugurated at the HICC in the city on Tuesday. The event is jointly organised by the Global Bio Business Forum, Pharmaexcil, Government of Andhra Pradesh and University of Hyderabad. Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Major Industries, Sugar and Commerce and Export Promotion J Geetha Reddy expressed her pleasure to on the overwhelming response to BioAsia, which she said was demonstrated record numbers of registrations which have been received from 24 countries across the Globe with the participation of over 90 companies.
The mega event will include a conference, tradeshow and B2B Platform to create premium opportunities for academic and industrial collaborations, presentations from experts, investment and collaboration opportunities, exhibition to show case latest trends and technology to a large gathering of biotech fraternity from across Asia and the World. It will also have a three track Conference; MediAsia, AgriAsia and HealthAsia. The MediAsia track will be focused on cancer treatment, both diagnostic and therapeutic solutions.
Ms Geetha Reddy, during her address, announced that the International Genome Valley Excellence awards will be presented to Dr Reddy's Laboratories Chairman Anji Reddy for his outstanding contribution to the life sciences industry and the Beijing Institute of Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China for their significant work in human genome sequencing. She said that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy will present the awards.
The Minister also revealed that there has been tremendous response from applicants from India and abroad for the Dr YSR Innovation Award. The award carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh, a citation and a memento for Young Scientists. The BioAsia has attracted 40 delegates from Iran, 15 from Malaysia and 9 from China. The Minister for Higher Education and Research, Selangor Govt of Malaysia, Halima Ali is one of the most prominent personalities participating in the conference.
During the inaugural session, important projects will be launched in Hyderabad, one of them Lonza Knowledge Centre (Switzerland) for their research and manufacturing facility and Lepakshi Knowledge Hub in Anantapur district.
Sri Biotech will launch its Integrated Discovery Centre project. The Pacific Hospitals with Trans-cell Biologics will launch a unit for stem cell banking and research in Hyderabad, A cancer research centre and hospital in collaboration with the Government of France which is set to be the largest cancer facility in India will be set up by Renaissance and Biogenesis by the Renaissance Cancer Hospital and Research Center at Shamirpet. Investments in all these projects are in the order of about Rs 3,000 crore.
The Indian biotech industry has grown threefold in just five years to report revenues of US$ 3 billion in 2009-10, a rise of 17 per cent over the previous year and is estimated to grow to $10 billion by 2015. The major sectors include bio-pharma, bio-services, bio-agriculture, industrial biotech and bioinformatics. In the total biotech exports, the major share is from bio-pharma followed by bio-services.
Hyderabad is the bulk drug capital of India and Andhra Pradesh has 266 Bulk drug and intermediate manufacturers and 125 formulation units and 90 per cent of them are SMEs. Out of 169 Indian USFDA applications, 49 are from AP; similarly, out of 1100 Indian Medicines marketed by Indian companies in US, 300 medicines are from Andhra Pradesh. Pharma production of AP is Rs 20,000 crore, out of which 50 per cent are exported in 2009-10. About 23 per cent of country's Pharma exports are from Andhra Pradesh. During the past 4 years, investments worth Rs 1500 crore have been implemented in the pharma and related chemical industries. The future turnover of the state pharma industry and exports are expected to grow at a rate of 20 per cent on par with the country's growth.
The state government has established a Park in the name of ICICI Knowledge Park in an area of 200 acres near Hyderabad duly providing with all the infrastructure facilities to best suit the R and D and product units in the sectors of the Biotech field. Developed plots of 66 acres and built up space of 1,44,000 Sq ft. have been allotted to 45 units to the needy companies and about 30 units have already established which includes EI Dupont, Aptuit Laurus, US Pharmacopeia, Sai Advantium, Makhtheshim Agan India, Laxai-Avanti Laboratories, ITW Polymers, Daicel Chiral, and Advanta India. About 1600 scientists and technicians of 400 persons are employed directly in various units of the Knowledge Park. The units have invested about Rs 450 crore on the park development as well as R&D and production units, and many further investments are expected.
