Quality forest cover needed: Jairam Ramesh
Hyderabad, March 19 (INN): Appreciating Hyderabad's efforts in increasing its green cover over the last 25 years, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh on Saturday called on the need and importance to develop quality forest cover and not focus on the quantity.
Delivering the special address at the first edition of Green Landscape Summit 2011 at the CII-Godrej GBC, Mr Jairam Ramesh said that both the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) will work together in taking forward the need and importance of green landscaping in a much bigger way. He added that, today, the world is recognizing India's leadership role in fostering and promoting Green India.
The MoS said urbanization is happening at a rapid pace and the same should happen in a planned sustainable manner and green buildings can play a catalytic role in addressing these issues. Mr Jairam Ramesh informed that the new office building of MoEF which would be ready by middle of next year would be net-energy positive and incorporate eco-friendly features in the building.
Highlighting the critical importance of water, he underscored the need for water recycling, waste water re-use and protection of water bodies. Mr Jairam Ramesh also highlighted the need to address issues of Municipal Solid Waste Management in an effective and better way.
The Hon'ble Minister responded favorably when CII proposed eight suggestions for green buildings and green landscape movement. These suggesting include the development of database on native species, developing Case study of '100 best practices' in green landscape, initiate 'Tree Banks' programme, encourage minimum 'Vegetative' open spaces as 10 per cent of the total site area for commercial buildings, residential townships and SEZ, incentivise urban buildings providing 30 per cent of total site area with landscape, encourage 100 per cent use of treated waste water/ rain water for projects with site area greater than 1 acre, develop 'Green Landscape Guidelines' and Rating System for: public parks, townships, commercial buildings, residential buildings, institutional buildings, factories and all existing and new manufacturing and service companies can follow the basic requirements of Greenco Rating for Companies, the first of its kind in the world developed by CII.
Dr Prem C Jain, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) said IGBC envisions bringing down the construction costs of green buildings on par with conventional buildings by 2015 and called on everyone to make Green as a way of life.
