Spectacular 'Teppotsavam' caps Dasara mahotsavams

VIJAYAWADA: Dasara Mahotsavams peaked with a spectacular 'Teppotsavam' illuminating the banks of river Krishna.

To mark the end of Navaratri celebrations at Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy temple, the presiding deities were taken on a 'Hamsa Vahanam' as part of the Teppotsavam on Vijaya Dasami on Friday.

A large number of people gathered at the Durga Ghat and on Prakasam Barrage to witness the procession of priests carrying the decorated 'utsava vigrahalu' for the Teppotsavam.

On Friday, the last day of Dasara Mahotsavams, Goddess Durga was adorned as 'Sri Raja Rajeswari Devi' and the temple witnessed a turnout of more than one lakh devotees. The environs of Indrakeeldari reverberated with devotion and festivity as more than six lakh devotees had darshan of Kanakadurga during the Dasara Mahotsavams overall.

'Compared to the previous year, the devotee rush has increased. On the auspicious 'Moolanakshatram', the temple witnessed the largest turnout of devotees in the past 30 years,' said temple sthanacharya Sivaprasada Sarma.

Besides Moolanakhstram (Oct 1), devotee flow was also heavy on Sept 28 (Sunday) and on the last two days. Even after the completion of Dasara Mahotsavams, the temple witnessed a heavy inflow of devotees as the 'Bhavani Deeksha' began Saturday. The temple authorities appeared relaxed and happy as Dasara Mahotsavams were completed successfully.

'We are happy that the Dasara Mahotsavams were celebrated successfully with more than expected turnout of devotees. More than six lakh devotees have visited the temple during the Mahotsavams.

We shall review the Mahotsavams soon and try to correct if any mistakes are detected. We shall increase the scale of Annadanam and also make all efforts to implement online ticket booking system as ordered by the CM,' said temple executive officer V Trinadha Rao.

While the Dasara Mahotsavams this year were a huge success, a few instances of devotees arguing with the temple authorities and the police were witnessed. The devotees also faced trouble with the unexpected heavy rain Friday and Wednesday. Also, a woman devotee was injured due to an electric short circuit Thursday.
