Fatwa against AR Rahman & Director A fatwa has been issued against AR Rahman for his involvement in the Iranian film titled 'Muhammad: Messenger of God' that was released this year. A Mumbai-based Sunni Muslim group, Raza Academy, has reportedly issued a fatwa against Oscar-winning music director and filmmaker Majid Majidi. The fatwa asks Muslims to reject the film and declares that Rahman, Majidi and other Muslims working on the film have committed sacrilege. Rahman and Majid have been accused of making a mockery of Islam.
The film by the director Majidi is the first in a trilogy on the life of Prophet Mohammed. The fatwa claims the film makes a mockery of Islam, and objected casting some non-Muslims in the key roles.Defending their move of issuing fatwa, the group reiterated Prophet Mohammad's word that no visual or picture of him be created or kept. Both Rahman and Majid have been asked to read the kalma again and also solemnise their marriage again.
Earlier the same group had sent a notice to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh seeking ban on the film. AR Rehman has not yet responded on the matter.
