Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital sets record with 176 surgeries in a day
Visakhapatnam: Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital at Naidutota here achieved a new milestone on June 10, 2026, by performing 176 eye surgeries in a single day, the highest in its history.
The hospital said the feat was made possible by coordinated efforts of doctors, operation theatre staff, paramedical teams, outreach personnel, the Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva team, and Arogya Mitras. The details were shared in a press release by K. Bangar Raju, Deputy General Manager, PR, Liaison & Corporate Relations.
Of the total 176 procedures, 116 were performed under the Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva Programme, which provides free treatment to eligible patients. The remaining surgeries included 19 paid Phacoemulsification procedures, 16 cornea surgeries, and 21 retina surgeries and related procedures. The hospital also carried out additional surgeries in orbit, paediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, and other subspecialties on the same day.
Trust Board Chairman M. Ramdas commended the doctors and supporting staff for what he called a 'memorable achievement' that brought laurels to the Foundation.
To mark the occasion and boost team morale, a function was held where Managing Trustee & CEO A. Krishna Kumar felicitated the doctors and staff. He applauded their 'stupendous efforts' and said the record reflected the institution's commitment to high-volume, quality eye care. Heads of specialty departments, OT personnel, and paramedical and outreach staff were present.
Sankar Foundation operates eight state-of-the-art operation theatres equipped with advanced technology at its Naidutota campus. The hospital said its outreach teams conduct regular screening camps across North Coastal Andhra Pradesh to identify patients needing surgical intervention, which are then brought to the base hospital. The Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva Programme and support from Arogya Mitras play a key role in patient mobilisation and follow-up care.
Established as a not-for-profit institution, Sankar Foundation has been providing eye care services for over three decades. The hospital said it continues to focus on delivering quality treatment with compassion while setting new benchmarks in service efficiency.
