Massive Earthquake Strikes North India A massive earthquake struck North India on Monday afternoon. The earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale shook north Indian states a little after 2.30 pm on Monday. Tremors felt for more than a minute in all northern state and created panic among public.
People rushed out of offices and homes as buildings shook in national capital Delhi. Metro has halted services In Delhi for a while as a precautionary measure.
Sources said neighbouring countries Pakistan and Afghanistan too suffered heavy damage. Strong tremors were reported in Pakistan, Afghanistan where over 10 people have died and 150 injured. The US Geological Survey said the' quake's epicentre was in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. The earthquake occurred over 150 km deep in the earth.
Massive damages were reported from Srinagar, where the communication set up was badly damaged and the power supply has gone kaput. People frantically rushed out of their houses and offices as the ground shook.
"Heard about strong earthquake in Afghanistan-Pakistan region whose tremors have been felt in parts of India. I pray for everyone's safety," tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that he I had' asked for an urgent assessment.
