Harish Rao asks Centre to enhance cotton MSP Hyderabad, Nov 3 (INN): Telangana Irrigation and Marketing Minister T. Harish Rao called on Union Secretary for Textiles Sanjay Kumar Panda at New Delhi on Tuesday and demanded that the Centre pay Rs. 5,000 per quintal to cotton farmers.
Harish Rao said that the Centre was presently paying Rs. 4,100 per quintal to the cotton farmers and this must be enhanced to Rs. 5,000. Further, he said that the Cotton Corporation of India was purchasing cotton for three days in a week. He said this period should be increased to five days. As against the purchase of nearly one lakh quintal last year till November, this year only 15,000 quintal has been purchased.
Harish Rao also complained that as against the promise of setting up 84 Centres to purchase cotton, the CCI has established just 45 Centres across Telangana State. He also appealed the Centre to increase the moisture level criteria from existing 12% to 20%.
During his Delhi visit, Harish Rao also met Civil Supplies Secretary Swaroop. He was accompanied with TRS MPs B. Vinod Kumar, Jithender Reddy and K. Prabhakar.
