'Happy to Bleed' Campaign against Scan purity of women at Sabarimala A recent statement by newly appointed Sabarimala temple board president Prayar Gopalakrishnan that women should be allowed into the temple only after the invention of a machine to "check the purity of women" has drawn a widespread protest.
The age-old custom of Sabarimala temple prohibits women in the menstrual age group (usually between 10 and 50) from entering the temple. The media asked the newly appointed president when women will be allowed to offer prayers at the Sabarimala temple. Gopalkrishnan said that it can happen only if there is body scanning machines that can detect whether the woman are menstruating at the time of entry.
Woman organisations and FB pages have reacted strongly against the comment of Travancore Devasom Board President. A campaign by name 'Happy To Bleed' was launched on Saturday asking women to "to hold placards/sanitary napkins/charts saying Happy To Bleed" and post the pictures on their profiles or the campaign page "to oppose the shame game played by patriarchal society since ages."
'Devaswom chief of Sabarimala temple, Kerala has given a sexist statement that once purity checking machines are invented, that check whether it is 'right time' or not, (whether woman are menstruating or not) are invented, he will think about letting women enter. By this statement, he has reinforced misogyny and strengthened myths that revolve around woman,' the statement posted on the Happy To Bleed page says.
Several women across the nation started supporting this campaign. An active member on the page posted, "I'm definitely #HappytoBleed all over patriarchy. More power to all equal rights movements!"
Another post says ' I have a uterus and I bleed once every-month. God does not get angry if I pray during my #periods. Mr. Prayar Gopalakrishnan and every one who thinks women are impure during their periods, don't forget its the same 'Impurity' you survived on, for 9 months inside your mother's womb.' #HappyToBleed
