WhatsApp, the popular messaging application owned by Facebook, has been banned by Brazilian judge for 48 hours, starting this morning at 2:00am, after failing to comply with a court order.
"The company(Whatsapp) did not attend the court order and the prosecution requested the blocking of services for a period of 48 hours, based on the law," said the 1st Criminal Court
The case is related to the use of voice-over-internet (VOIP) calls through WhatsApp. Brazil's largest telecoms operators lobbying against WhatsApp because it operates using standard mobile numbers, but offers free voice calling. According to Facebook more than 100 million Brazilians access the service.
"This is a sad day for Brazil. Until today, Brazil has been an ally in creating an open internet," Mark Zuckerberg posted responding to ban on Whatsapp.
Meanwhile with blockage of Whatsapp, Telegram, a rival messaging service has seen excessively high demand in BrazilIn a tweet, the company said its service had picked up over 1.5 million users.
