Jagan demands action against UoH VC Hyderabad, Jan 20 (INN): Asserting that YSR Congress will take up the issue of discrimination of dalits in the University of Hyderabad (UoH), YS Jagan Mohan Reddy demanded that action should be taken against the Vice Chancellor and all others involved and has urged the authorities to revoke the suspension on the remaining students.
'The suicide of a brilliant student due to discrimination and the uncalled for interference of Union Ministers is disheartening and action should be taken against all those responsible for the events that led to the death of the dalit student Rohit,' the Leader of Opposition in Andhra Pradesh Assembly told reporters here on Wednesday.
'We will take up the issue in the Parliament and question the concerned ministers for their uncalled for intervention which turned the situation from bad to worse. We firmly believe that the interference of union ministers is unwarranted.
What started as a small issue between two student unions had snowballed into a major controversy and the five letters written by a union minister to his cabinet colleague has worsened the matter further. The issue would have been resolved amicably locally.
The Vice Chancellor instead of quickly putting the issue to an end had allowed things to precipitate towards more trouble which culminated in political leaders coming into picture and mounting pressure to take action against the dalit students which in turn resulted in the suicide of Rohit. We demand that the suspension of the remaining students be revoked forthwith and action should be taken against the Vice Chancellor and all others who were responsible for the discrimination of dalits, he said.
The present committee set up to probe into the incident has three members, including the Vice Chancellor, whose credentials are questionable and we have our own doubts about the outcome. There are already attempts to project the victim as a BC and not a dalit and such tampering will continue.
'Unless politicians speak out and create a public opinion such injustice will continue to replete and I demand that stringent action should be taken against all those responsible for the suicide of Rohit, suspension of dalit scholars and social boycott,' he said. Earlier, the YSR Congress President has visited the residence of Rohit and consoled his mother and conveyed his condolences.
