AP Assembly passes resolution for 33% women reservation Hyderabad, March 8 (INN): The Andhra Pradesh State Legislative Assembly passed a unanimous resolution on Tuesday requesting the Centre to enact the Women's Reservation Bill providing for 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures.
The resolution was introduced by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and the same was unanimously adopted by the House. Participating in a special discussion to mark the International Women's Day, Naidu listed out various schemes being implemented by his government for the empowerment of women. He also promised to provide 33% reservation for women in government jobs.
In his speech, Leader of Opposition Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy ridiculed the Chief Minister's statement and alleged that the Telugu Desam Party had no respect for women. He raised the issue of Call Money Sex Racket in Vijayawada.
"One of your MLAs manhandles a woman tehsildar who tried to curb the sand Mafia. You suspend our woman MLA from the House for a year for no reason. A minister's son is involved in an eve-teasing incident in Hyderabad. One of your MLAs talks bad things about women. This is the respect you have for women?," asked Jagan.
Ministers Srinivas Rao and Chinna Rajappa strongly objected to Jagan's remarks and said he was not speaking on the topic.
The Chief Minister later moved the resolution demanding 33% reservations for women in legislative bodies which was unanimously adopted by the Assembly.
