109 blood banks found violating norms Hyderabad, July 8 (INN): Of 132 Blood Banks across Telangana State inspected by the Drugs Control Administration, 109 were found violating various provisions of law.
According to DCA Director Akun Sabharwal, there are 132 registered Blood Banks & 35 Blood Storage centers in Telangana. A two-day State wide inspection of Blood Banks was undertaken on 7th & 8th July in which all Blood Banks were covered.
The aim of this exercise was to bring out the shortcomings and lacunae in the functioning of Blood Banks; and to ensure that Corrective measures are put in place.
Each Drug Inspector was tasked the inspection of a maximum of 4 Blood banks ' 1 in each half of the day. Thus, about 4-5 hours were spent by each DI per Blood Bank. A 2 page check list was provided to each DI as guidelines for inspection. Each Drug Inspector was sent to an area other than his original jurisdiction.
Major violations found in blood banks are under-staffing, Inadequate number of doctors, Inadequate number of technical manpower, Improper Logging, Incorrect record of donations and sale, Improper maintenance of various statutory records, Overcharging patients for whole blood and its components, Inadequate and/or poor maintenance of equipment, Improper Storage conditions, Inadequate area, Poor/Unhygienic Conditions, Non Maintenance of prescribed temperature of storage and absence of Sterility Testing
Sabharwal said notices would be issued to Blood banks for the violations recorded by DIs. This process is underway and will be completed in the next four days. The Blood Bank will be given seven working days to respond and rectify. If the DCA is not satisfied by the action of the Blood Bank, the license will be suspended and the Blood bank shut down, he said.
