Majority of workers reported for duty: GHMC Chief Hyderabad, July 14 (INN): GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar claimed that almost a majority of workers, who were on strike for the last nine days, have reported for duty by Tuesday evening.
Speaking to media persons here, Somesh Kumar said that following appeal by State Government to call of strike in view of the festival season of Ramzan, Bonalu and monsoon season, a majority of workers have joined duties on Tuesday. Of 18,382 workers, a total of 14,270 workers attended to duty. Similarly, almost 90% of Sanitary Field Assistants also reported to duty, he said.
While appealing the remaining workers to rejoin the duty, Somesh Kumar said that the State Government would consider their demands within 3-4 days. He alleged that some workers were reluctant to join duties due to pressure from outside leaders not related to the strike. Stating that he sanitation workers are participating in the strike, he asked them to join duty in the interest of their own welfare.
Somesh Kumar said that the GHMC has been making alternate arrangements to lift garbage and attend to other civic issues. Wherever necessary, the GHMC is taking the help of the police in taking up the sanitation. 'Action will be initiated against those who obstruct the work. During the strike period, about 3,000 metric tons of garbage was lifted and transported to dumping yard,' he said.
