Unidentified ghats to be closed Rajahmundry, July 17 (INN): The Fisheries Department of Andhra Pradesh has decided to close all unidentified ghats posing risks to pilgrims during Godavari Pushkarams immediately.
The decision was taken in view of two incidents in which three youths drowned, Deputy Director of Fisheries Dr. V. Venkateswara Rao announced here on Friday.
Talking at the Godavari Pushkarams main media centre at Arts College grounds in the afternoon, he said while two youths died at Voobalanka and one drowned at Katheru. At both the places, they had gone up to 500 metres since water was not adequate for a dip. "Unidentified ghats are slippery and muddy. As one moves on, suddenly one finds the slope to be too deep. We have decided to increase the number of divers at Seethanagaram ghats, Katheru and Jonnada ghats," he said.
There was also an incident at Seethanagaram on July 13 when two youths went far inside and drowned. Fortunately, they were immediately rescued. While one recovered immediately, the other recovered in the hospital after treatment, he disclosed.
