AP CS reviews Buckingham Canal works Hyderabad, July 24 (INN): The Buckingham Canal connects Andhra Pradesh State and Tamil Nadu State through a network of canals of the rivers Godavari and Krishna, Chief Secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao said.
The Chief Secretary held a meeting today to review on the Buckingham canal. About 400 KMs long fresh water navigation canal from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu State, connects most of the natural backwaters along with coast to the port of Chennai. After completion of the waterway project, it will get a major boost in the trade and industry by considering its low cost transportation, Chief Secretary opined.
The Water Resources Department officials briefed about the Canal. Inland water transport consisting of Kakinada Canal, Eluru Canal, Commamur Canal and Buckingham Canal provides uninterrupted transport by connecting Kakinada Port in Andhra Pradesh to Chennai Port in Tamil Nadu State. These canals are irrigation sources cum navigational sources and the Buckingham Canal is a Tidal Navigational canal. The canal joins with the Commamur Canal at Pedaganjam of Prakasam District and runs parallel to the Coramandel Coast. The North Buckingham canal traverses through 11 Mandals in SPSR Nellore District.
The Government of India, Inland Waterway Authority of India (IWAI) would help for the development, maintenance and management of navigational sources.
The Chief Secretary issued instructions to the concerned for conducting of land plan surveys for demarcation, delineation and required land acquisition and to record all the details of existing physical structures within the right of way for land acquisition.
Prl. Secretary Water Resources Department Adityanath Das, Secretary Energy Ajay Jain and others attended the meeting.
