Central official reviews works on new BIS building Hyderabad, Aug 16 (INN): Union Secretary for Department of Consumer Affairs C. Vishwanath visited Hyderabad to have interaction with the officials of Bureau of Indian Standards, Food and Public distribution, Legal Metrology and State Commissions of both Telangana state and Andhra Pradesh state and other consumer organizations.
Bureau of Indian Standards is functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs. BIS, Hyderabad is in the process of acquiring a new building for increasing its operations. The secretary met the engineers of CPWD and discussed about the progress of construction.
During his visit to the New Building of Hyderabad Branch Office of Bureau of Indian Standards at Moula Ali, he met the officials of BIS, State Food departments, state commissions Legal Metrology of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states and Other Consumer Organizations in the meeting.
Viswanath apprised that the Ministry is intended to provide enhanced Consumer Protection thru upgradation Consumer Protection Act and setting up more Consumer Centres in the districts and publicize in the semi-urban and rural areas. He said that a new bill has been introduced in the parliament to provide more powers of search and seizure under Bureau of Indians Standards Act, 1986. He informed the participants that Hallmarking will become mandatory very soon.
The Officials of both Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh State, interacted with on various state subjects. Dr Rajat Kumar, Commissioner and Secretary, Food and Consumer Affairs, Shri S. Gopala Reddy, Controller, Legal Metrology, V. Janardana Reddy, Asst Registrar, Telangana State Consumer Disputes redressal Commission and other officials from Telangana Govt participated. From Andhra Pradesh Government, Ravi Babu, Director, Civil Supplies, Srinivas, Asst Registrar, AP State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and other officials from Legal Metrology participated in the discussions.
At the end, Viswanath interacted with BIS officials E.Devendar, Sc-G and Deputy Director General, BVSN RAO, Scientist-F and Head of Visakhapatnam Branch office, K.N RAO, Scientist-F and Head of Hyderabad Branch and others on the subjects of Branch operations and shifting of Visakhapatnam Branch and about the new BIS bill.
