Congress demands all-party meeting

Hyderabad, Aug 19 (INN): Leader of Opposition in Telangana Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir asked Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao to stop cheating the Muslim community further with the promise of providing 12% reservation in jobs and education.

Addressing the Maha Dharna organised by the Ranga Reddy District Congress Committee at Viqarabad on Wednesday, Shabbir Ali referred to the statement made by Dr. Amir Ullah Khan, a member of the Commission of Inquiry studying socio-economic and education conditions of Muslims in Telangana, wherein he clearly stated that 12% Muslim quota was legally not possible. He said that the Congress party has expressed these fears since KCR made this lucrative promise during elections. He said Dr. Amir Ullah Khan's statement vindicates the stand taken by the Congress party. He said instead of constituting a judicial Backward Classes Commission, KCR set up a Commission of Inquiry. "The Commission members themselves stated their recommendations would not stand valid to provide reservation and the government would have to constitute a BC Commission for the same. We have been saying this from beginning. At least now, KCR should stop misleading the Muslim community," he demanded.

Shabbir Ali also demanded that the Chief Minister convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue of 12% Muslim reservation. He said Telangana could not emulate the Tamil Nadu model of giving 69% reservation. "The courts have quashed the GOs on 5% Muslim reservation in the past and the then Congress Government was forced to reduce the quota to 4% to stick to 50% ceiling. All legal aspects were explored and debated before doing so. Therefore, KCR should accept the reality that he could not provide 12% Muslim reservation," he said.

While addressing the Maha Dharna, Shabbir Ali also slammed the TRS Government for its failure to fulfill any of the promises that it made with the people during elections. They include promises like making Viqarabad a new district, three acres of land for Dalit families, KG to PG free education, 2 BHK houses, completion of Pranahita Chevella project, etc.,

Shabbir Ali alleged that KCR appears to be having allergy with farmers. "KCR has completely neglected the agriculture sector although nearly 70% of State population was depended on it. He remain inert to suicides committed by over 1,000 farmers since TRS came to power. These statistics were disclosed by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) itself. KCR is trying to mislead the farmers with programmes like 'Grama Jyothi' while ignoring the fact that almost all water resources have gone dry and farmers lost third consecutive crop. Four to five farmers are committing suicide every day. But nothing is being done by the government to prevent suicides," he said.

The Maha Dharna, presided by former minister G. Prasad Kumar, was also addressed by TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, former minister P. Sabitha Indira Reddy, former MLAs Kona Srisailam, Bhikshapati Yadav and other leaders. Hundreds of farmers also participated in the Maha Dharna.
