Opposition to launch agitation against liquor policy Hyderabad, Aug 22 (INN): The major opposition of Telangana State took a unanimous decision to launch a massive public campaign against the State Government's proposal to introduce cheap liquor.
The decision was taken during an All Party meeting held at Kalinga Bhavan at Jubilee Hills here on Saturday. A Steering Committee has also been formed and Prof. Vishveshwar Rao has been appointed as its chairman. The meeting, convened by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee, was attended by leaders of Telugu Desam Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Left Parties and representatives of different NGOs and Women's Organisations.
Addressing the meeting, TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy accused the TRS Government of playing with the lives and health of poor people by promoting cheap liquor. He demanded that the government convene an All Party meeting on the issue to take the views of opposition parties on the proposed policy.
Telangana TDP Legislature Party leader Errabelli Dayakar Rao advised that the campaign against cheap liquor policy should be launched from Gajwel, the constituency represented by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao himself. He said it was wrong to put the thousands of poor lives at stake to generate revenues.
BJP floor leader Dr. K. Lakshman said that his party would raise the issue during the forthcoming session of Assembly session and all opposition parties should jointly force the government to withdraw the policy.
The leaders of Left Parties and other NGOs too have announced their support for joint agitation against the proposed policy.
