Over 500 drivers of Uber hold protest Hyderabad, Aug 25 (INN): More than 500 drivers working with Uber held a strong protest against the company's failure to fulfill its commitment in providing business and other incentives.
The drivers, led by Telangana Cabs and Bus Operators Association President Syed Nizamuddin, assembled at Uber's city headquarters at HICC in Madhapur on Tuesday and raised slogans against the Uber management and demanded that it honour the commitment made with them at the time of joining. The protest went on for nearly three hours. On information, Madhapur police also reached the spot.
Sensing the angry mood of drivers, the Uber management offered to talk with the protesting drivers. Uber Manager Arman sought two days time to resolve the issue. Madhapur Sub-Inspector Srinivasulu also witnessed the talks between the drivers and management.
The drivers alleged that the Uber has lured them by promising monthly income of about Rs. 70,000. However, they are not able to earn more than Rs. 15,000/- per month due to drastic cut in incentives and number of trips. Based on Uber's commitment, the drivers alleged, that they purchased new cabs by selling or mortgaging their properties or gold. Due to sudden change in business model or policy, the Uber management is not giving promised business to the drivers who enrolled with them.
The Uber has enrolled nearly 15,000 drivers from Hyderabad by paying a joining incentive of Rs. 5,000/- and another Rs. 5,000 was paid to the drivers who referred others. "Most of the drivers, who were working with different cab operators, have quit their regular jobs and joined Uber with the hope of earning a good amount. However, their dreams were shattered and all of them fell into huge debt traps after Uber cheated them," said Syed Nizamuddin.
Nizamuddin announced that the drivers would intensify their protest if the Uber management fails to come out with a concrete solution by Thursday.
