PDFA demands free power for dairy farmers Hyderabad, Sept 2 (INN): The Progressive Dairy Farmers Association of Telangana (PDGA) urged GHMC and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to conduct regular checks by collecting milk samples of all brands to keep check on the adulteration of the milk, said PDGA General Secretary Kandala Bal Reddy.
He was speaking to the media to announce the forthcoming South India's largest Dairy Show to be held at Hitex from 5th to 7th September. He added that we need to put pressure on government for effective control of milk trade particularly rampant adulteration with poisonous chemicals for increased profits.
According to some findings in the year 2011, 70 per cent of milk used to be adulterated. This adulteration was more north which was upto 70 per cent. Pondicherry and Goa were the two states where zero adulteration was found. Adulteration of milk in Southern states when compared to Northern States, is less. In combined state of Andhra Pradesh it was found that only 3 to 7 per cent of milk was adulterated. But, that was in the year 2011. Now things have changed. Though there is no particular per centage of adulteration we can give, but, certainly more than 5 to 7 per cent of milk is adulteration now, informed Bal Reddy.
If government implements regular checks and findings if published in newspapers, then milk will be free from adulteration very soon, he said. We are not serious about quality and the authorities are also very casual about daily checks, he said.
In the year 2008, there was a big infant milk scandal broke in China, which affected thousands of children. The Chinese Government acted swiftly and hanged 3 culprits and convicted few for life imprisonment. Adulteration of milk continues if culprits are booked and punished he said.
He wanted government to provide free power to dairy farmers as well as rescue them by giving interest subsidy of 9 per cent to create interest in farming and employment to lakhs of youth in rural areas and stop migration from villages.
Dr. Jithendar Reddy. President of the PDFA urged the government to consider Dairy Farmers on Par with Agri Farmers.
