Wanted a leader for Kapus Hyderabad: The stage has been set for the formal merger of the Praja Rajyam Party with the INC, but the communities that had identified with mega star Chiranjeevi and his political outfit seem to be finding it difficult to reconcile with his decision for going the Congress way. It is more so with his community- the largest social grouping that accounted for more than 22 per cent population of the state.
The Kapu community which had found much in common with the PRP manifesto, dreamt of making to the echelons of power. The PRP enjoyed broad support from all the castes and sub-castes in the fold of the social grouping. But their hopes seem to be quickly thwarted.
Their disillusionment is palpable. 'Chiranjeevi as a Congress leader may not have the same appeal for them.' A search is on for a new leadership that could rally the support of not only the Kapu community but also all the dispossessed and disadvantaged sections that have extended political support to the PRP irrespective of its success in the state politics.
The PRP has written itself off from the political map of the state much before defining its role. It failed in bringing about its much avowed goal of social justice -- a slogan that helped in wooing the dispossessed communities.
Though caste appears to be loosening its grip over the rest of the society, its growing ascendancy over politics cannot be ignored, says a young leader of the social group. And hence there is a renewed search of effective leadership to fill the vacuum.
He said that Chiranjeevi was not successful in projecting himself or his political party on the caste lines. He had rather tried to reach out to all the disadvantaged and his slogan of social justice appeared to have cast its spell.
He did not try to promote either the caste or caste solidarity for political purpose - a factor found acceptance in a few political parties.
