Why they hate Rosaiah? Hyderabad: The political stand-off between former Chief Minister K Rosaiah and a section of Telangana Congress leaders is nothing new. It all started after he took over as chief minister in September 2009 under peculiar circumstances.
On and off, the Telangana leaders have been unleashing a verbal attack against Mr Rosaiah since then and Sunday was no exception as three leaders including two MPs, K Keshava Rao and Ponnam Prabhakar and a former minister T Jeevan Reddy spoke against the veteran leader. Mr Rosaiah said that Telangana cannot be achieved on streets, it can be realised through consultations and discussions.
Mr Rosaiah, however remained unfazed. 'Whatever I want to say, it is in the best interests of all sections of the society. If I want to condemn them, I have to issue a statement but I am not bothered about it,' he told.
Less than a month after Union Home Minister P Chidambaram made a statement in favour of Telangana, Mr Rosaiah said that the Telangana movement was being run by the extremists drawing flak from one of his cabinet colleagues Komatireddy Venkata Reddy. Things went to such an extent that Mr Rosaiah even complained to the party high command about Mr Venkata Reddy's remarks against him.
The Telangana leaders always perceived him as anti-Telangana, like former chief minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, who allegedly joined hands with TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu to successfully stall the initiating process of formation of Telangana statehood. He might not have entertained them when he was chief minister for 14 months.
The other reason why these leaders are sore with him is that two plum nominated positions' TTD Chairman's post and Governor to a major state ' were given to Congress leaders from Coastal Andhra while ignoring those from Telangana region.
One senior party leader said: 'If only loyalty was the criteria, senior Congress leader M Satyanarayana Rao would fit the bill. Mr Satyanarayana Rao was also AICC general secretary in 1983 when Ms Indira Gandhi was prime Minster.'
'Mr G Venkata Swamy has immense experience and served as Union Minister for a long time. Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao has been close to the Rajiv Gandhi family for more than two decades but they were never considered for any post.'
According to him, Mr Rosaiah collected the opinion of all party leaders at a meeting on December 7 which were in support of Telangana. He went to Delhi with the minutes of the meeting and handed over them to Mr Chidambaram.
But within three days, that too after Mr Chidambaram made the statement, he told the high command that it was not possible to get the resolution adopted due to the circumstances prevailing at that time. All this has made the Telangana leaders suspicious about his intentions as far as separate state is concerned.
'If he told the Congress leadership that the Assembly resolution was not possible, Mr Chidambaram would not have made the statement on Telangana and the present political mess could have been avoided,' senior Congress leader and MLC K R Amos said.
AICC Secretary and MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy said that Mr Rosaiah has been Governor designate and holding a Constitutional post, he ought to have avoided comments on Telangana.' He should have parried the questions saying that the Centre will take a decision. Since it is a sensitive issue, he should behave in a more dignified manner,' he said.
