Congress appears favourable to T Hyderabad, Oct 5 (INN): `To create or not to'' is the dilemma the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre is presently confronted with.
In a new revelation, it is gradually emerging that the Congress party as an individual entity and the Union Government have parallel opinions on the possible bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
A top Congress leader from the Centre, who hails from the State and enjoys close proximity with the corridors of power, insists that the top brass of the party is, by and large, in favour of the creation of Telangana State.
The Telangana backers are reportedly pressing the administration to think beyond the next general election. It is one of the reasons why the party High Command has not been able to discipline its soldiers from Andhra Pradesh, which boasts of 33 members in the Lower House.
The source said that pressure is mounting on the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who is being singularly blamed for the manner the ongoing Janula Samme was allowed to enter its 23rd day today.
It is said that Mr Reddy has been questioned by the High Command. A veiled threat of initiating action and putting an end to the impasse has already been issued to Mr Reddy, said the source.
With the Council of Ministers in total disarray after Ministers from Telangana started staying away from office and government employees sticking to their guns, despite the `No work, no pay' clause, Mr Reddy is being blamed for having failed miserably in keeping his flock together.
The source said that even the report, submitted recently to Sonia Gandhi by party General Secretary and in-charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs, Ghulam Nabi Azad has found fault with Mr Reddy's `inept' style of administration.
The party's immediate priority would be to restore order in the State, where life has come to a standstill. With coal miners and employees of the State-run Road Transport Corporation joining the Samme, the woes of the government have compounded.
In addition to the farmers, even the common man is bearing the brunt of the four-hour power cuts that have been imposed.
The senior Congress leader pointed out that Friday's meeting of the Congress core committee will be a no-holds-barred one as leaders from Telangana region are training their guns on the State leadership.
He said that although, the committee will, in all likelihood, call for expediting the process of statehood, the ball may fall in the court of the Union Ministry.
It is likely that the Centre may buy time on the pretext of combining the Telangana State demand along with those of other smaller states. The move could prove disastrous as the proponents of Telangana from the Congress party are fuming and are already on the streets.
Political observers opine that things could alter dramatically, one way or the other, after the Core Committee meeting passes some resolutions on the statehood issue.
