Panchayat Raj - The jinxed ministry? Hyderabad: The portfolio of Panchayati Raj department seems to be playing havoc with the careers of many politicians in the State.
Right from former chief minister late Dr M Chenna Reddy, who held the portfolio in Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy's Cabinet in early 1960s, to the incumbent K Jana Reddy in the N Kiran Kumar Reddy government, many of them never had smooth going as far as their career was concerned.
Dr Chenna Reddy held the portfolio from 1962 to 1967, but was in wilderness for a couple of years till he became Governor.
Late T Hayagreeva Chary also held the same portfolio when P V Narasimha Rao was the chief minister but he became inactive later.
M Baga Reddy held the portfolio in 1978 and went on to become MP later but could not become Union Minister.
N Sreenivasulu Reddy, was PR minister in the Jumbo Cabinet of T Anjaiah, he quit Congress to join Telugu Desam and continued as a minister in successive governments till N Janardhana Reddy became chief minister in 1992. Subsequently, he was never accommodated in the government.
D K Samarasimha Reddy was in charge of the ministry in 1992, but after he was defeated in the elections, he never found his lost glory.
K Vidyadhara Rao also held the portfolio during N Chandrababu Naidu's tenure and went into political hibernation for some time.
A Madhava Reddy TDP, who headed the ministry, died in Naxal attack within three months. His successor Pocharam Srinivas Reddy and Dr Nagam Janardhan Reddy are no longer in Telugu Desam.
J C Diwakar Reddy, who was Panchayati Raj minister in Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy's cabinet in 2004, was not inducted into the cabinet in 2009. K Jana Reddy, who is holding the portfolio at present, is under pressure from Telangana supporters to quit the Cabinet.
