It's placements galore in OU colleges Hyderabad: In what appears to most of us incongruous, the troubles the OU students faced in the form of T-strike, violence and cases, proved a boon as the serious among them snatched the time to prepare for the campus interviews.
Result? Some 500 engineering grads have 627 offer letters in their pockets today. Some are even strutting about with two or three!
Colleges affiliated to OU received 100 per cent placements this year in spite of the recessional trends, T-agony and amid the talk of US-triggered slowdown.
'Over all we have 627 offer letters. Some students also have two offer letters. Though our's is a battle ground for all the Telangana action we are least affected. Every year around 25 to 30 companies visit our campus and by next semester we are expecting the other companies to come.
By the end of the year I'm sure each student will have a minimum of 2 to 3 offer letters of Rs 3 lakhs per annum,' says Ramesh Reddy, OU placement officer.
'I have three offer letters and I'll choose the one which will give me an early appointment date,' says Deepika Kanchan, Muffakham Jah College.
There are 500 regular engineering students and all of them are placed in the top companies. Companies like Infosys, Wipro, Mahindra Satyam and De Shaw have visited the most antagonised campus and has recruited students, placement sources confirmed.
Compared to last year the placement recorded in Osmania University and other colleges in Hyderabad is on an upswing.
'Last year we started it only in the final semester but this year we started early. Nearly 70 per cent of my students are placed. In the next few months the others will also be placed.
We had companies like Vensan, Purple talk and Net.orange who came for placements,' says Sudershan Murthy, director Keshav Memorial Institute of Technology.
The month-long bandh in the city turned out to be a blessing for the fourth year students. Most of them got time to prepare for placements and did well in the interviews.
'Last year by this time there was no talk about placements . My seniors got placed only in March. For us it's very surprising that it started so soon especially in the given scenario,' says Usha Vendeatmam, CBIT.
Ravi Teja a placement trainee from Seventh Sense says, 'We give training to final year students for placements. I have been doing this for a long time now and from my experience this year so far the placements have been good. Many students are placed but the heat of recession is also slowly gripping them.'
But all this does not mean immediate appointments. 'Most of them will get their appointment letter only in March 2013. Due to recession companies have appointed them and kept them as stand by. As and when new projects come they appoint them,' officials said.
Level A colleges got good placements this year. But level B and C colleges are the ones who will face the heat of recession soon. Most of the last year students have not been allotted their joining date and are not expecting it till the end of March 2012.
Academicians believe that this is one of the golden year for placement. 'Being in one of the top colleges most of my students placed. But with the instability in the American economy the date of joining may get postponed.
Already the dates have been postponed twice for the current batch. Until the students get the date of joining it's a big doubt,' says K Dasara Ramaish, I T HOD, Dr B V Raju Institute of Technology.
With so many problems in the State the student community seems to be unaffected by it. Now its only the next global recession which is gripping then with tension pangs.
