Tactical retreat by Jagan MLAs Hyderabad: The state Congress leaders' claim that Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy has lost his clout appears to be a tactical retreat by the majority of the MLAs in the latter's camp, to overcome the present adverse developments they are caught in.
The MLAs have openly admitted that they have to tend their electorate by ensuring developmental activities in their respective segments for the next two and a half years, but also ensure that rivals do not gain an upper hand in their constituencies.
The MLAs are said to have concluded that even if the main Opposition Telugu Desam moves a no confidence motion in the coming winter session, there will be no imminent threat to the Kiran Kumar Reddy government.
Mainly because, these 26 MLAs do not want the House to be dissolved at this time, as none of them are willing to face elections now. 'Even if we go to polls, we are not sure of retaining our seats due to the prevailing political situation,' said one of the MLAs in Jagan's camp.
They are also worried of election expenditures that have reached mammoth proportions. Would Jagan be funding them? They are not sure.
The other reason they cite is that the statements made by Jagan that the Congress retained power in the State and Centre due to the hard work of former chief minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and his party would not engineer the downfall of these two governments till their term expires in 2014.
Some of them even mention the uncertainties surrounding Jagan arising from the CBI investigation. These being the reasons making them edgy and creating some distance between them and the YSR Junior, they have not lost sight of their long term interests or plans.
Mr Jaganmohan Reddy is viewed upon by the leaders in his community as the real inheritor of his late father's legacy at the grass root level. They are said to be under the impression that Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy is a 'weakling' who failed to establish himself as a strong leader gaining confidence of the rank and file of the party.
If Jagan has been talking of ushering in 'Rajanna Rajyam,' for his group MLAs, it means continuance of not only their community rajyam, but those good old days of patronisation that kept them happy. These being the long term odds and expectations, these legislators cannot naturally afford to severe off their relations with Jagan.
To sum it up, they may be moving away from him tactically and temporarily, but will remain with him strategically for the future. Unless that future very adversely hits Jagan in the ongoing cases, observers say.
