By-polls likely in two phases Hyderabad: By-polls to the 24 Assembly constituencies including seven in the Telangana region are likely to be held in two phases.
As per the Constitution, no Assembly or the Lok Sabha seat can be kept vacant for more than six months and Speaker Nadendla Manohar's office has already informed the State government about the six vacancies ' three in Mahbubnagar: J Krishna Rao, Rajeshwar Reddy (Congress) and N Janardhan Reddy (TDP) and one each in Warangal T Rajaiah, Nizamabad Gampa Govardhan (TDP) and N Prasanna Kumar Reddy, Kovur in Nellore districts.
The Election Commission of India is expected to issue notification to hold elections soon. With regard to the remaining 18 Assembly seats, the Speaker will take a decision on the disqualification petitions filed by the Congress, Praja Rajyam Party and Telugu Desam Party against the legislators representing these constituencies later.
Action is being sought against them for taking part in anti party activities and also for violating the whips issued by their respective parties.
According to sources, Anantapur urban MLA Kapu Ramachandra Reddy has informed the Speaker's office that he did not receive the original copy of the disqualification petition, which was being sent to him.
'The Speaker wants to ensure that no one will find fault with him for taking any hasty decision and is following the procedures involved in cancelling the membership of the members,' sources said.
As part of the exercise, he would meet the MLAs individually after he returns from his native Tenali on Monday (January 2). No decision was taken with regard to Allagadda MLA B Soba Nagi Reddy, who has been supporting the YSR Congress party.
