Arrests made bureaucrats nervous
Hyderabad: After the inclusion of two more members of the IAS fraternity, one serving and another retired, in the Emaar case chargesheet by the CBI, bureaucrats in the state are rattled. Some of the more nervous ones are conferring among themselves and voices are being heard that it is time to call uncle.
'Though no meeting of the IAS Officers' Association has been planned, a few members of the fraternity met and discussed pouring out their woes to the Centre,' one IAS officer said.
The trepidation is the result of the CBI's arrest in recent days of IAS officer BP Acharya who was in the thick of things in APIIC's dealings in the Emaar project.
Another senior IAS officer, V Srilakshmi has been spending time at the Chanchalguda prison while her alleged role in the Obulapuram mining scam is investigated.
In addition, several officers have been asked uncomfortable questions in relation to the slew of scams being investigated by the CBI: P Ramakanth Reddy, Ajay Mishra, M G V K Bhanu, P Samuel, K Prabhakar Reddy, Manmohan Singh and Aditya Nath Das.
With several brethren in the cooler, IAS frat members are seeking each other out and moaning about having to pay for the deeds they are bid to do by ministers.
'We have become soft targets. We cannot refuse to sign files. We have to do the bidding of our political bosses. Earlier we used to have some provisions\ wherein we could reject files outright. But now rules have changed,' said one officer.
After CBI arrested Srilakshmi, IAS officers approached chief secretary Pankaj Dwivedi and voiced their disquiet. Dwivedi's advice to the officers: if signing fishy files is getting you into trouble, don't.
Now that Acharya has been arrested, there are rumblings again that the Centre better be informed that babus are mere playthings in the hands of politicians.
