TRS, BJP stand-off over Mahbubnagar Hyderabad: The by-election in Mahbubnagar has brought to the fore serious differences between the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). With both parties bent upon fielding a candidate for this constituency.
The Telangana Joint Action Committee finally had to intervene to find truce between the two parties. Sources say that JAC had given time till today for both parties to arrive at a consensus or else it would enter the election fray by fielding an independent candidate.
The TRS announcing its candidate for the Mahbubnagar by-poll did not go down well with the saffron party. Falling in line with the JAC directive to support the candidates who resigned their posts, BJP initially had decided not to field its candidates in the five constituencies going for the bypolls.
However, as a mark of its magnanimous gesture of extending support, the BJP was hoping that TRS would reciprocate it by offering the Mahbubnagar seat.
But, all the hopes nose-dived once TRS announced Syed Ibrahim as its candidate for the Mahbubnagar election. Stunned by the development, the BJP held a long core committee meeting on Tuesday evening and decided to field its candidate for the Mahabubnagar as well as the Kovvur Assembly (in Andhra) Constituencies.
There was serious pressure from the party cadre to contest even in the Kama Reddy and the Station Ghanpur bypolls which would be considered at a later meeting, informed N Ramachandra Rao, general secretary of the BJP.
With indications that BJP had decided to take the bull by its horns, it was left to the Telangana Joint Action Committee to intervene and end the impasse.
Accordingly, wider consultations were held by the core committee of the T JAC with the representatives of the two parties on Tuesday which finished much earlier than the BJP meeting. Etela Rajender, D Shravan (TRS), Yendala Lakshminarayana, Ashok Kumar Yadav (BJP) took part in the talks held with the JAC.
