CBI JD under mining mafia threat

HYDERABAD: CBI joint director VV Lakshminarayana, who is heading the probe into various high profile cases, including the illegal iron ore mining case, faces a serious threat from the powerful mining mafia of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

A recent message from the Intelligence Bureau pointing to the threat from the mining mafia and the recent killing of Narendra Kumar, a young IPS officer at Morena in Madhya Pradesh, is what led the state police to provide Lakshminarayana with a Y category security cover.

Top sources disclosed that after the killing of Narendra Kumar by the mining mafia in MP, the IB reviewed the security of Lakshminarayana and some of his team members, who were investigating illegal mining, alleged illegal assets of Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and the APIIC-Emaar case among others.

In its message to the state police, the IB suggested providing immediate security cover to the CBI JD and his team members. Sources said the IB came across certain hard inputs suggesting that Lakshminarayana could be physically harmed by the mining mafia in order to derail the ongoing probe.

'Available inputs indicate that there is a sinister plot to harm him as the mining mafia and the well-wishers of YSR Congress president YS Jaganmohan Reddy are spewing venom at the JD.

While the mining mafia feels Lakshminarayana is being vindictive towards them, the politician's supporters hold that he is going overboard with the probe. However, the CBI JD is just doing the job assigned to him,' a top source said.

The IB message was treated as 'very urgent' and within hours, based on this very message, a group of police officials prepared a Threat Perception Report (TPR), had it cleared from the top brass and took a decision to provide him with 'Y' category security cover.

In fact, sources confirmed that Lakshminarayana had been receiving threatening calls over the last few months from unfamiliar numbers, after which he stopped taking calls from such numbers.

Recently, he also changed his mobile phone numbers, which are known to very few now. Before the decision to give him a proper security cover, Lakshminarayana was moving around along with an armed constable provided to him by the state police.

Sources said Lakshminarayana, a Maharashtra cadre IPS officer, who is known to keep a low profile, did not make an issue over his security despite receiving threats.
