Congress to shift focus from Jagan

HYDERABAD: Its vote bank dented by the YSR Congress Party, the Congress is putting in all efforts to garner support from its traditional and estranged voters in the forthcoming by-polls.

Since some classes like Reddys and Dalits are now believed to be veering towards the YSRCP, the Congress leadership has chalked out an action plan to win the hearts of these classes.

As per it, Congress leaders in the Nellore Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly constituencies will identify major social groups in the constituencies which can influence the electoral prospects of the ruling party.

Soon after identifying these social classes, the party will rope in prominent leaders from them to campaign in support of the Congress.

Apart from this, the services of women's groups, youth and student wings of the party will also be utilised to woo the Congress traditional vote-bank.

The action plan was prepared at a meeting of the constituency coordinators meeting held at the Gandhi Bhavan on Friday. The meeting was presided over by AICC emissary Vayalar Ravi.

According to PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana, who also participated in it, the review meeting took stock of the political situation prevailing in the state.

'We have appointed two coordinators in each constituency to supervise electioneering of the party. We have issued some guidelines to step up the campaign,' the PCC chief said.

It is learnt that lack of coordination between the cadres of the Congress and the erstwhile Praja Rajyam at the grass roots was also discussed at the meeting, in which endowments minister and erstwhile PRP leader C Ramachandraiah also participated.

Vayalar Ravi emphasised the importance of coordination between the Congress and the erstwhile PRP cadres for effective canvassing.

Party sources said Vayalar Ravi asked the leaders not to give too much importance to YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the YSRCP chief, during campaigning.

Instead of resorting to verbal attack on him, the Congress leaders should concentrate on campaigning about the developmental and welfare programmes, being implemented by the state government, the AICC emissary directed the Congress leaders.

It is learnt that Vayalar Ravi was of the opinion that repeated verbal attack on Jagan would only help him gain sympathy from voters.

Meanwhile, the party leadership asked the coordinators of the various constituencies to establish election control rooms at the headquarters of constituencies.
