Jagan has only Rs 2,900 in jail account

HYDERABAD: YS Jagan Mohan Reddy who is accustomed to 'live the life' in his palatial mansions and spend lakhs of rupees, now has a 'meagre' amount in his private account, in his present residence: Chanchalguda prison.

The balance, when last information was got, was Rs 2,900. This is the story of the man who had declared his assets to be Rs 356 cr last year. On Qaidi No. 6093's account in jail, his wife YS Bharathi had deposited Rs 4,000 on June 1.

In the last five days, Jagan used Rs 1,100 for buying ice creams (info on flavour not available), biscuits, cold drinks, mineral water and other needs like soap, toothpaste, etc.

According to jail sources, Jagan is using his money moderately compared to other special class prisoners. All convicts, ordinary undertrials and special class undertrials in jail, have cash accounts for their needs, apart from what the jail provides, by following norms, the source revealed.

'Nimmagadda Prasad carries a mineral water bottle with him, all the time in jail.' he added. At present, in IAS officer BP Acharya's account, there is Rs 1,200.

In industrialist Nimmagadda Prasad's account Rs 3,060. In former excise minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana's account Rs 1,100. In industrialist Koneru Prasad's account Rs 2,500.

In businessman B Srinivas Reddy's account Rs 3,000. In bureaucrat VD Rajagopal's account Rs 2,009. In N Sunil Reddy's (of OMC case) account Rs 3,600. In senior bureaucrat KV Brahmananda Reddy's account Rs 1,000.

Suspended IAS officer Y Srilakshmi who is lodged at the Chanchalguda womens' central prison, did not open an account. She gets all her, toiletries, cosmetics, magazines and books through her family members, twice a week.

Prisoners are not allowed to have coins or paper currency, as there is no currency circulation in the prison. The prisoners are given money tokens, to be used as money.

There are tokens in the denomination of Rs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 20. Prisoners have to use tokens at the canteen, where inmates can buy cigarette packets, tobacco, biscuits, cold drinks and ice-creams.

In the evenings, hot and spicy mirchi, aloo bhajji, green chilli pakoda among other savouries are also available at the canteen. Inmates can get mineral water, snacks and tea during the day.

The canteen facilities can be availed even by ordinary prisoners. Sources say that ordinary prisoners who are 'placed' at service of their special class counterparts, are given tokens by the latter to buy snacks for themselves.

Inmates can get biscuits, pickle, clothes (for under trial inmates), cosmetics including paste and brushes from outside. However, no cooked food is allowed into the prison, as per jail norms.
