Reasons behind huge voter turnout in by-polls HYDERABAD: What is the reason for the increase in polling percentage in Narasapuram constituency in West Godavari district and Parkal in Warangal district? And, why did voters not turn up in good numbers in Tirupati constituency, which recorded the lowest poll percentage among the 18 Assembly constituencies?
Compared to the 76 percent polling in 2009 general elections, Parkal registered a voter turnout of 83.98 percent, which is more than the average poll percentage of 80.
One reason for this is the fervent campaigning by TRS, BJP and YSRC. Candidates and party workers have gone door-to-door more than one time seeking votes. The second reason is youth are staying in their respective villages for summer vacations.
Narasapuram recorded the highest poll percentage of 88.77 in the just concluded byelections, compared to 71 percent in 2009. It is said people want change, and so they turned up in large numbers.
The main reason for the low turnout of voters in Tirupati, though there is a slight increase compared to 2009, is aversion of certain sections of the society towards the contesting candidates.
There were allegations of corruption against all the three main contenders for the seat. One is accused of misuse of temple wealth, while there are charges of land grabbing and indifferent attitude towards voters against the other two.
It is said people, in fact, expressed their opinion of the candidates by not voting. People here also appear to have expressed their aversion to frequent bypolls.
