Tough times ahead for Naidu HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam, which has been an alternative to the Congress all these years, now appears to be an alternative to the YSR Congress in Andhra and Rayalaseema regions with the Congress being butchered in the by-elections and the road ahead for the party also not looking very smooth either.
In the Telangana region, it is neither the Congress nor the TDP that is an alternative to the TRS but it is the YSR Congress. The voting in Parakal showed that both the parties stood more or less on equal ground.
In Andhra and Rayalseema the TDP ended up second in 10 constituencies but drew a blank everywhere. In contrast, the YSRCP stood second only in three constituencies. The Congress stood second in five constituencies and third in ten.
The TDP candidates polled around 70,000 votes in Prattipadu and Macherla. Though the party was expected to win at least four seats, it could not.
In a surprise result, the TDP lost in Payakaraopet, its stronghold since the party's inception.
Though the byelections provided an opportunity to the TDP to improve its tally in the Assembly in the wake of defections in Telangana, its attempts came a cropper.
Its leaders have come out with lame excuses saying that since all the byelection seats were originally held by the Congress and the TDP had nothing to lose.
Speaking to reporters TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the acts of the government and the speeches of Congress leaders helped Jagan gain public sympathy.
