Parkal result, a pointer to TRS future HYDERABAD: Despite the Telangana Rashtra Samithi winning the Parkal Assembly byelection, party cadre are in no mood to celebrate.
The reason: Unlike in the past when the party candidates had won elections with landslide majority, this time it scraped through in Parkal by a thin margin of 1,562 votes.
The party's rank and file strongly believe that the election result puts a question mark over the dominance of TRS in the region and might even impact the very Telangana movement.
Though the party leadership might be giving various excuses, the cadre feel that the attitude of TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao has proved costly for the party.
The Parkal byelection generated much interest across the state as former minister Konda Surekha sought re-election on behalf of YSR Congress Party, a party which strongly endorses the cause of Samaikyandhra.
She was neck and neck and matched vote for vote till the last minute giving her closest TRS rival the fright of his life.
The Parkal constituency in Warangal district is known to be a Left bastion. The TRS candidate was supported by the CPI and the TJAC.
In addition, the Congress and TDP cadre extended the secret support in the last minute. But none of these could help the TRS post a respectable win over the YSRC candidate.
TRS leaders in the district blame this on their party chief who keeps chanting that Telangana state will become a reality in the next three months.
'Whenever there is an election, he indulges in this rhetoric. But it has not helped the party this time. Further, our leaders kept saying that this byelection is very crucial to achieving separate Telangana but failed to explain to the voters how elections in a single constituency became crucial,' said a leader.
'The TRS has become a party of one family. Its chief appointed his nephew and MLA T Harish Rao as election campaign in-charge though a number of senior leaders are available in Warangal district,' another senior leader said.
