To save 1000 cr Gali spent 10cr a day Hyderabad: Former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhana Reddy had allegedly paid Rs 10 crore to have unrestricted phone facility for one day immediately after his arrest.
The cash-for-bail scam prompted the intelligence wing and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to dig deep into the allegations against officials of the prison department.
Reddy was arrested more than a year ago on September 5, 2011. He was sent to the prison the same day after being produced before the special court.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has seized Rs 3 crore in cash, gold ornaments weighing 30 kg, helicopter and luxury cars during investigation.
Later, ACB seized around Rs 10 crore that was paid as bribe to a judge and others for getting bail in the illegal mining case.
All the time, intelligence has been keeping a watch on the activities of Reddy and the prison officials behind the safety of the prison walls. Yet, the intelligence wing did not act then.
However, arrested accused including Reddy's brother Gali Somasekhara Reddy spilled the beans before the ACB that they got instructions from Reddy during the frequent meetings inside the prison.
Now ACB officials received inputs that Reddy paid Rs 10 crore to some influential people to get unrestricted phone facility for one day on the day of his arrest.
The purpose was to give instructions to his trusted assistants to shift gold bars and Indian currency all worth around Rs 1000 crore to secret locations, sources said.
The gold and cash were lying in dens stuffed in gunny bags. Even the bribe money paid to the special judge through mediators was handed over stuffed in gunny bags.
Neither the associates of Reddy nor the mediators who received the money could count the cash, sources said.
The ACB is only looking for a complaint or direction from competent authority to probe the allegations against prison officials, while a couple of suspects are running from pillar to post to save their skin, sources said.
