Hidden messages of Assembly session Hyderabad, Dec 3 (INN): The message Congress Government got in the special Assembly session is loud and clear. It has to face a united opposition and Legislative Affairs Minister Sridhar Babu along with the whips should work overtime in the ensuing Winter Session to keep it flock together and strive for better floor coordination.
The Assembly plunged into an embarrassing situation with majority of its members keeping away when the amendments and clauses are put to vote.
Their complacency would have cost very dear but for some fire-fighting exercise by Chief Minister, N Kriran Kumar Reddy, TDP Deputy Floor Leader P Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Speaker Nadendla Manohar.
Now that it is clear, that the Opposition would rise in unison on any issue, treasury benches should be alert, attendance in full besides having floor coordination, what with the differences TDP, TRS, MIM, YSRCP and BJP have among them.
Sunday's voting, though the Opposition lost by a considerable margin, indicates what is in store for Congress in the coming days.
The game plan of Congress had also succeeded when it accepted the Opposition's challenge on the categorisation of SCs issue knowing fully well that a Supreme Court ruling is in place against any such regrouping.
When the Opposition went hammer and tongs and YSRCP extended its last minute support and the counting was over, Chief Minister told the House about the apex court ruling.
The House was aghast and every Party had to reaffirm that they were not against the SC, ST Sub-Plan but only pressed for voting based on the resolution the House had earlier passed on the categorisation. They left the matter to the wisdom of the chair.
Here two things are very clear. The Opposition is united, second Congress proved its point that it is not against categorisation but had to abide by the Supreme Court verdict.
With the point proved, the Opposition ran for shelter and Speaker came to the rescue and quoted from the rule book a provision which saved the day.
The high drama was not in Opposition asking for a division, but Congress continuing the suspense quoting Supreme Court ruling even though it knew that the Opposition amendment was lost by a considerable margin.
However, each Party claimed its contribution for the Bill to be passed. Watch out in the coming days for more action in Assembly.
