Wide choice for engineering aspirants HYDERABAD: Students opting for an engineering course at the under-graduate level will be spoilt for choice again this year. An intake of approximately 3.22 lakh has been approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) in BE and B.Tech courses in 623 colleges in the State.
As mentioned in the first list issued to the State government for the year 2013-14, it marks an increase of around 30,000 seats over the last year.
At the end of the second phase of counseling in 2012-13, 1.29 lakh convener quota seats and around 80,000 management quota seats remained unfilled, prompting colleges to apply for closure of courses due to low intake, though many continued their courses based on the fee-reimbursement scheme provided by the state government as a steady source of revenue.
The list specifies the number of institutes granted approvals in the technical stream and the net intake. The list of institutions will be announced later after the second list is issued.
'We have the data of around 95 per cent of the colleges and the remaining will be added as soon as AICTE sends in the list,' said an official in the department of technical education.
Further, the decline in popularity of MCA as well as MBA colleges due to poor placement opportunities has led to decrease in the intake capacity this year by around 30,000 seats.
As compared to last year, the number of approved colleges offering the course have gone down by a round 100 each as 802 MBA colleges and 338 MCA colleges were granted approvals by AICTE.
Nearly 159 MCA colleges and 29 MBA colleges had recorded zero intake at the end of counseling for Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET) last year. The intake remains high at 1.19 lakh for both the courses as candidates prepare to appear for the examination on Friday.
