AAP fever grips Hyderabadis Hyderabad: The Aam Aadmi fever appears to be catching up with the youth in Hyderabad, following the swashbuckling performance of anti-graft crusader Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi Assembly elections.
The success of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has kindled public enthusiasm, particularly the youth, and there is a growing expectation that a similar experiment must be attempted in Andhra Pradesh.
Several people, particularly the middle class, youth and employees, feel that there is enormous potential in the State to replicate the AAP model here.
But, who will be the Arvind Kejriwal of Andhra Pradesh? On this question, the overwhelming opinion seems to be that a new leader with a clean image who can connect with the younger generation should emerge.
There is a fatigue factor as far as the present bunch of leaders, across the political spectrum, are concerned. The city youth are yearning for a fresh face, who can channelize the public disenchantment with the establishment and the mainstream political parties and offer practical solutions for good governance.
Though the success of Kejriwal spawned immediate comparison with the founder of Lok Satta Party Dr N Jayaprakash Narayan, the people by and large are not very enthusiastic about betting their hopes on him. Despite his lofty ideals and cerebral articulation, JP has not been able to make much difference to the political discourse in the State.
As a result, people do not look up to him as an alternative. 'He lacks the charisma to attract the common people and his message was intended for a few and his target audience was the middle class or high class,' Srujan Kumar, a HIBU employee said.
According to him, that there is no leader like Kejriwal who can bring a revolution in the state and no one has his charisma. He opined that once the State looked at Jayaprakash Narayana as a leader who could bring a change, but he failed to live up to the expectations of the people.
Several youth in the city want AAP to start its Andhra Pradesh unit so that it can attract many people looking for clean politics. It might see many educated people with clean record contesting the next Assembly elections on AAP ticket.
DST Worldwide Services employee P Dinesh said that it was hard to find who could be Kejriwal in our state and said that better than looking for an alternative of Kejriwal we should support the AAP and expand the party in the state which could be a game changer in the prevailing situation.
The city youth firmly believe that corruption is the single most important issue that needs to be tackled urgently if India has to become a super power. As per present indications, AAP has no plans to start any State units.
