Indian Soldiers suffering silently "Indian Army soldiers who are working selfless in serving the nation are facing severe problems like stress, sleeplessness and are also prone to depression" a recent report says. A private report which was submitted to Central Home department recently mentions that the soldiers are working in the places which are completely detached from the society and it is like "social expatriation" which is showing a severe impact on the mental health of the soldiers.
After talking to as many as 2 lakh soldiers who are currently deployed at various work places across the country, the report was prepared. In BSF even a small mistake is considered as a big sin and the punishments will be severe. The strict rules and the fear of penance is adding a lot of pressure on the soldiers. The personnel who are deployed at Pakistan and Bangladesh borders are staying away from the normal society for a long time and it is like some sought of social expatriation which is adding to the pressure.
The number of people who are committing suicide in the Indian Army and the number of people who are leaving the services also suggests that the report is true to a large extent. From 2009 to 2013, 597 armed forces personnel committed suicide. Several researches suggests that over work, poor working conditions and stress is responsible for the situation.
Soldiers are having very few holidays in a year and the time they spend with their families is very low. This is an addition to the pressure on the mental conditions of the personnel. Frequent changes in the work place is also showing a negative impact. At times they have to work under extreme hot and cold temperatures and are also at the risk of falling prey to wild animals. Though BSF is trying to provide all the facilities to the soldiers, it's impact is considerably low. This is forcing the brave soldiers who are under the mission of protecting the nation to suffer silently.
