Telangana Council all set to major changes

Hyderabad, March 3 (INN): The Telangana State Legislative Council is all set to witness major changes in the next two-three months.

While 19 out of 40 seats will be replaced with new faces, the election of new members will completely change the political composition of Legislative Council while making Telangana Rashtra Samithi a dominant force in terms of numbers.

The process is on to elect two new members from Graduates Constituencies. Presently those seats are held by Prof K Nageshwara (Mahabubnaghar - Ranga Reddy - Hyderabad) and K Dilip Kumar (Warangal - Khammam - Nalgonda). The elections to elect new members will be held on March 22.

Similarly, the term of 19 other members will end in the next two months. They include seven MLCs who were elected under MLAs quota. Their term will end on March 29. They include D Srinivas, Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed, KR Amos, K Yadav Reddy, S Rajalingam of Congress and B Laxminaraya and B Venkateshwarulu of TDP. However, except for Srinivas and Shabbir Ahmed, remaining five MLCs had joined the TRS a few months ago. After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, one MLC seat got reduced under MLAs' quota. Therefore, elections will be held to elect six new MLCs. Going by the parties' strengthen in the Assembly, the TRS will get four seats while Congress and TDP-BJP combine will get one seats each.

The term of B Venkat Rao of Congress, who was nominated by the Governor, is also coming to end. Venkat Rao too had joined TRS after it came to power.

Seven more MLCs who were elected under local bodies quota will retire on May 1. They are S Jagadishwar Reddy (Congress - Mahabubnagar), Bhupal Reddy (Congress - Medak), Bhanuprasad Rao (Congress - Karimnagar), Nethi Vidyasagar Rao (Congress - Nalgonda), P Narendra Reddy (TDP - Ranga Reddy) and A Narsa Reddy (TDP - Nizamabad). Except Narsa Reddy, remaining six MLCs are presently with the TRS.

While elections for two seats under local bodies of Adilabad and Warangal could not be held due to court cases, three additional seats of Mahabubnagar, Ranga Reddy and Karimnagar can go to polls only with the approval of Central Government.

Therefore, the 40-member Telangana Legislative Council will undergo a major revamp in the next two-three months and almost half of members will be the new faces.
