NTPC to enlist vendors to procure materials
Hyderabad, April 17 (INN): The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), India's largest power producing company, has decided to expand the vendor base and bring uniformity in procurement process at all power plants.
With an installed capacity of 44,398 MW, the NTPC power plants procure every year materials worth of about Rs 2,000 crore and awards work contracts of about Rs 1,600 crore for their operational and maintenance. "For achieving this goal, the NTPC is going for enlistment of vendors and contractors for procurement of all materials and works contract on All India basis. In this process, NTPC wants to involve each and every potential vendor/contractor of all materials and works required by power plants so that no eligible vendor is left out of the tendering process of NTPC plants," R Venkateswaran, Regional Executive Director (South), NTPC Ltd said.
Until now, for operational requirements each plant used to procure separately by issuing tenders in the local area of the plant and issuing tender notices to known sources of materials and services. He said that the cost of procurement has increased substantially and there always exists chances of cartelization. This has resulted in long procurement time and uncertainties about the period of procurement. This resulted in increased inventory cost of the power plants, he said.
"The vendors are usually located near the vicinity of power stations. With the new single window procurement system, we will get larger participation, better quality of products at reasonable prices," he said.
On expansion plans in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, he said that the NTPC is working on a 4,000 MW Thermal Power Plant at Ramagundam in Telangana besides a 4,000 MW Thermal Power plant in Pudimadaka in Visakhapatnam along with a 1000 MW solar power project in Ananthapur district.'Implementation of the first phase of 250 MW of solar power projects would be taken up shortly,' he said adding that a 10 MW solar plant willl be set up at Ramagundam.
He also said that the Simhadari power project in Vizag is ready, but commercial operations were not started due to non-completion of transmission works.
