NRI receives Basha Memorial Award The Basha Memorial Award for Young Outstanding Social Activist for the year 2014-15 has been presented to a Non-Resident Indian, Suresh Ediga. The Award was presented to him at a ceremony held at Anakapalle on Aug 9th. Central Information Commissioner Madabhushi Sridhar, well-known journalist Tankasala Ashok were the chief guests of the occasion. A memento and a cash prize of Rs 20,000 constitute the award.
The Basha Memorial trust, Anakapalle, Andhra pradesh, recognized Suresh's consistent and committed work for the cause of farmers and his other work aimed at bringing positive change in society. Suresh Ediga who lives in New Jersey and works in New York is a well-known NRI activist, working on various issues in India, such as prevention of farmers' suicides, providing basic necessities to tribal people, bringing awareness on RTI and several other causes. He is one of the key persons behind NRI Samay Radio, bringing untold stories to the mainstream through an online Radio.
Suresh came to the U.S. in 2001, completed his M.S. Degree from NJIT and has since been working in New York City. He is also associated with the NGO Association for India's Development (AID). He started an organization called i4Farmers to help farmers in distress, with help from his friends and recently raised Rs. 10 Lakh to help families of farmers who committed suicide in Vidarbha. He works very closely with local NGOs in India to bring out the rural innovation through Palle Srujana. He provided help for weavers, encouraging an innovation of 'Aasu' machine by a weaver.
Suresh is also an RTI activist, calls government officials to solve problems reported through CGNet Swara and engages with people's representatives on crucial policy matters. He led the campaign to call MPs when Nirbhaya case was going on.
Suresh Ediga donated the award amount back to Basha Memorial Trust to continue their activities.
