Chennai on Kolaveri to watch '3'
Chennai: The movie that rode the crest of the Kolaveri Di wave, 3, released to almost thrice as many screens in Chennai as a normal Tamil release would, on Friday.
The sheer number of shows scheduled for the Dhanush - Shruti Hassan starrer directed by Rajinikanth's daughter Aishwarya R Dhanush, made it seem like it was a film release of the 'Superstar' himself.
While shows in popular multiplexes around the city screened twice as many shows, some like the Mayajaal multiplex and AGS Cinemas cashed in with the former playing as many as 43 shows.
Even Sathyam Cinemas, arguably the most popular cinema destination in town, screened as many as 14 shows through the weekend - before you try, they're sold out till Monday.
With enough hype in the run-up to the release of 3 (Moonu) courtesy the Kolaveri Di phenomenon on Youtube and FM airwaves, the movie had little trouble filling shows throughout Friday.
'Despite colleges and schools having exams, there were a good number of students walking in after an exam in the afternoon and evening,' said a multiplex insider.
However, the morning show was dominated with a lot of hype - apparently, a lot of Superstar fans had conducted their pujas and had attended the first show.
Just like they would for a Rajini film, 'This is his family production and hence we are treating this as his own film,' said G Ravi, an office bearer in one of the actor's fan clubs in Chennai.
There were also reports of a small rush at Albert Theatre as rumour spread that the Superstar had flown in to watch it. Considering he is shooting in London, they were disappointed.
This is more than that can be said for the initial 'viewer reviews' of the film as different sections of the audience had varied responses - from 'unwatchable' to 'rom-com of the year'.
