Cops threaten to take Gabbar Singh to court
Hyderabad: Pawan Kalyan's much anticipated venture 'Gabbar Singh' has stirred up many controversies even before its release. The latest is the objections raised by the police personnel. The Andhra Pradesh Police Officers Association has said that it has found Pawan Kalyan's mannerisms and his contempt for police uniform objectionable.
Chalapati Rao, president of AP Police Officers Association, said: 'We have a few objections about the visuals and scenes in the trailer of Pawan Kalyan's 'Gabbar Singh' like rolling a handkerchief over his head and unbuttoning the police uniform.'
'We spoke to the Regional Censor Board chief Dhanalakshmi and urged her to look into the issue. We are also not ruling out legal action against the filmmakers,' he adds.
But hasn't Tollywood movies often indulged in mocking the cops? 'We do agree that it is not new to Telugu cinema. But when a prominent actor is involved in it, it has a lot of impact and influences people.
I've been receiving many calls expressing their disgust against 'disrespectful scenes' on cops. This will be an initiative and we won't allow making such scenes hereafter.'
The movie is an official remake of 'Dabangg' and the Salman Khan starrer was a 2010 blockbuster in Hindi filmdom. 'We have not seen the Hindi original. As far as we are concerned, we don't accept contempt of police in Telugu cinema,' he retorts.
The trailer of 'Gabbar Singh' shows Pawan Kalyan as a cop and it sees him delivering the dialogue 'Naakonchem Tikkundi' kani daniko lekkundi' (There is a method to my madness) which grabbed the attention of people.
Director Harish Shankar and producer Bandla Ganesh refuted the objections made by the Police Association members. The duo said that scenes in the movie were aesthetically shot and admitted that they have respect on cops and the department in particular.
However, the Police Officers' Association warned of legal action, if necessary. The movie got the clearance from Censor Board on Tuesday and awarded U/A certificate. Surrounded by controversies, it is due to release on May 11 worldwide.
