ANR : A legend turns 90 Akkineni Nageswara Rao, the eternal romantic hero and the Grand Old Man of Telugu cinema, turned a grand 90 on Friday. The Dadasaheb Phalke award winner who was also honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honour for his contribution to Indian cinema, has had a glorious 71-year-old career marked with blockbusters.
The unstoppable actor will soon be seen in 'Manam' (his 256th film) a movie that spans three generations of the Akkineni family including his son and actor Nagarjuna and grandson Naga Chaitanya.
The actor had a flood of visitors for his birthday celebrations which took place at his residence in Hyderabad on Friday morning. T Subbirami Reddy, Murali Mohan, several of his family members including his daughterin-law and actress Amala were present at the informal celebrations.
Business tycoon T Subbirami Reddy celebrated the thespian's birthday on a grand scale at Ravindra Bharathi on Friday evening.
Several other Telugu academies such as Yuva Kala Vahani and Delhi Telugu academy also felicitated him for his contribution to Telugu industry.
In 1941, at the age of 17, ANR debuted with 'Dharmapatni,' in which he played the role of the protagonist's friend. Before that, he predominantly acted in theatre, many times donning female roles since women weren't allowed on stage at that time.
He has since acted in over 255 films. He continues rule the hearts of Telugus as the eternal romantic hero who could woo any lady with great ease.
He was the quintessential lover boy, ideal husband, incorrigible sentimentalist and above all, an actor who touched everyone's hearts with his very screen presence.
Even a cameo of his in today's movies gets him a standing ovation from the audience as was witnessed recently in movies such as 'Sreerama Dasu' and 'Srirama Rajyam'.
His filmography has milestone movies such as 'Devadas', 'Dr Chakravarthy',
`Prema Nagar', `Premab. hishekam', `Mega sandesham' etc. His most recent blockbuster is `Srirama Rajyam'. Among other things, ANR is credited for influencing Telugu film producers and creating a base for Telugu films in Hyderabad.
