Review: Biryani - Hot and Spicy This is a typical Venkat Prabhu film. A director who mastered the art of black comedy thrillers, his signature elements ' car chases, hot item number, thrills and suspense ' are in abundance in `Biriyani'. In addition, his unconventional climax too surfaces in the thriller, which is sleek and taut.
Casanova Sudheer (Karthi) is best friends with Parasu (Premgi) since childhood. The latter, in fact, is at the losing end of every trick played by the former when it comes to wooing girls.
Working for a private firm, both attend a business deal at Rajahmundry where the handsome Sudheer manages to win the attention of media baron Varadarajan (Nasser).
As he leaves a party to have biriyani with Parasu, he comes across Maya (Mandy Takhar). She catches his attention on the first sight and after exchanging pleasantries, the trio land up in a hotel.
A song follows and cut to next reel, Sudheer sees himself in a secluded place away from the hotel. He rushes back to the hotel only to find Varadarajan dead next to Parasu.
What makes `Biriyani' click is the way the narration unfolds. There is a hardly a moment where the viewer gets fidgety. Director Venkat Prabhu ensures that the film moves at a breakneck speed taking the help of action blocks and cleverly written sequences.
He also finds humour in the most gripping moments of the film, a feature that is limited to few filmmakers. Be it the portions where both Sudheer and Parasu make it to the news channel that Priya (Hansika) works or the one where Sudheer elucidates to her the basis why the cops are after them simply show the command that Venkat has over writing.
It is not bereft of its weak links either. Yuvan Shankar Raja's music turns out to be pretty mediocre. The film also gets a bit puzzling as it nears the climax.
Karthi is the livewire of the film.
He meets the characters demand of being a playboy, a confused soul, and an emotional guy with gusto. The amity he shares with Premgi, who is a regular in Venkat's films, is to look out for! Together they bring the house down on more than multiple occasions and carry the film forward.
Hansika is limited to songs but it's good to see her getting back to top shape. Mandy Takhar makes quite an impression with her seductive act. Nasser, Ramki, Sampath and Madhurima go about their jobs as usual.
Overall, minus a few niggles towards the end, 'Biriyani' is a roller coaster ride. Though it might not give you the high that a Hyderabadi Dum Ka Biriyani offers, it's still worth the money.
