Tollywood faces financial crunch The Telugu film industry is experiencing a peculiar phase this rainy season as release of several big ticket films are being put off. Releasing new films at a time when some of the big budget extravaganzas are raking in the moolah at the box office is only resulting in a disaster.
Another aspect is how re-scheduling of film's release due to financial issues are incurring huge losses for the makers. The Telugu film industry is facing the risk of losing crores of rupees either ways.
Till now, only a few big budget films that have managed to do well at the box-office, are Ram Charan starrer Yevadu, Balakrishna starrer Legend, Allu Arjun's Race Gurram and the Akkineni's multi-starrer Manam.
NTR Jr starrerRabhasa is still being hyped, though the run hasn't been as expected at the ticket window. Despite facing finance issues, the film hit the screens on August 28, 2014, but failed to live up to the hype, surprising trade pundits and the audience.
However, exhibitors are shying away to remove the film from the theaters due to lack of other big releases, causing concern in the trade circles.
As a matter of fact, because of the line-up of big releases like Mahesh Babu's Aagadu and Ram Charan's Govindudu Andari Vaadele, the release of another big budget film Oka Laila Kosam featuring Naga Chaitanya and Pooja Hegde had to be delayed.
The film, originally scheduled for release on August 29, has now been postponed to October, says sources. Similarly, the release of the Nikhil starrer Karthikeya has been postponed from August 1 to October second week.
Filmnagar circles say that the delay is due to financial issues and there is also a commercial motive behind the decision. The makers are expecting fancy price for the Tamil dubbing rights, preventing them from releasing the film.
Also the release of Sai Dharam Tej's debut film Rey has been postponed multiple times, but this is for entirely different reasons. The film has landed in financial problems.
As per reports, producer and director of the film YVS Chowdary is facing financial hiccups and it needs him to pump in over 10 crores more to wrap up the entire shooting of the film. Rey's delay is resulting in the postponement of Sai Dharam Tej's second film Pilla Nuvvu Leni Jeevitham.
According to the industry convention, until all payments due to the artistes, technicians and everyone else related to the film are cleared; many films will not be seeing the light of the release.
In YVS Chowdary's case there were dues pertaining to some of his previous films, says the buzz. While the producers have their set of calculations for not releasing the films or explaining the reasons for delay, exhibitors are not complaining.
'When some films are doing extremely well with good occupancy, we are not worried for other releases. We don't want movies to lock horns with each other. In fact, it's the producers who have to plan meticulously and space out the releases, as it will only be beneficial for the industry,' reasons Srikanth, a renowned distributor from Nizam.
